In particular, Kikkoman needed a lactic acid strain capable of fermenting soybean and providing great taste, and identified Nizo as a partner that could provide dairy-derived strains and support it with knowhow about natural selection techniques used to select strains of lactic acid that grow well on soybean and produce great flavour. The Nizo strain collection contains strains isolated from a variety of food sources, and is particularly rich in strains that are suitable for dairy and other food fermentation. As a result of the partnership, the two companies said, Kikkoman developed ‘a great tasting soy milk yogurt drink’ that will be ready to launch in the Japanese market next month.Kikkoman applied for an international patent for the lactic acid strain, and the companies have concluded an exclusive licensing agreement for the Nizo-derived strains used in the fermentation. They said they were ‘excited’ about the prospect of bringing the product to market.Share with your network: Tags: alternative milksJapanKikkomanmilkNetherlandsNizo

Premier Foods calls off Ambrosia sale, blaming business climatePosted By: Jules Scullyon: February 18, 2019In: Business, Food, Industries, Mergers & AcquisitionsPrintEmailPremier Foods has abandoned plans to sell its Ambrosia brand of custard and rice pudding, blaming the current business climate. The British food manufacturer announced its decision to offload the unit last November, in a move to focus on brands such as Batchelors.Since the start of2019, Premier said it has been “engaged in detailed discussions with a small group of potential buyers”.However, the firm’s board believes the current business climate will “not result in a satisfactory financial outcome” if the brand is sold. The decision has been welcomed by trade union Unite, which represents 300 workers at Ambrosia’s factory in Lifton, Devon,Unite regional officer Mark Richards said: “Premier Foods’ announcement is good news for the workforce, who have experienced three months of uncertainty about their future.“Unite will now be seeking urgent meetings with Premier Foods to seek strict assurances that the company is now fully committed to the long-term future of the factory and its workforce.“The Ambrosia factory is a major employer in this part of Devon and its long-term future is vital to the existing workforce and the local community.”In its most recent quarterly results published last month, Premier recorded a 2.2% drop in sales. As announced in November, CEO Gavin Darby left his position at the end of January.Speaking about the results last month, Darby said: “We faced into two sets of challenges in the quarter – lower international sales and our logistics programme, which as expected, affected cake sales volumes early in the quarter.”Share with your network: Tags: Premier FoodsUK
Housing Wed 14 Feb 2018 08.00 EST Share via Email ‘Declaration of war’: liberals divided as California mulls housing push About this content This article is more than 1 year old Last modified on Mon 17 Sep 2018 08.02 EDT California Share on Twitter Outside in America Share on Facebook Erin McCormick in San Francisco California Share on Pinterest To keep up with population growth, California needs to build 180,000 new homes each year. But for the last 10 years, it has constructed less than half that figure. This scarcity has driven up rents and the prices of homes to the point where half of the state’s current residents can no longer afford them and homelessness has surged. In San Francisco, the state’s most expensive housing market, the median sales price of homes was $1.25m in 2016 and the median rent was $4,500.Liberals have found themselves pitted against liberals, with urban environmentalists who want to build “smart cities” with dense housing around transit lines facing off against minority groups fighting to protect inner-city neighborhoods and suburbanites wanting to slow growth. It has divided renting millennials from their homeowning parents and created a passionate breed of housing activists calling themselves Yimbys.Inspiration for Wiener’s new bill stemmed in part from an unexpected corner: a squat building that once housed a Kentucky Fried Chicken in San Francisco’s desirable Mission district. Over a decade ago, developers wanted to build 16 rental units there. But faced with neighborhood concerns ranging from the building’s lack of parking spaces to the effects of construction noise on a next door theater, the project was subjected to some 20 hearings and review meetings as the approval process dragged out over a 10-year period, according to the landowner, Mark Rutherford. After getting through eight different board votes to win city approval, it was challenged again by a neighborhood lawsuit.“It demonstrated an aversion to new housing, coupled with an expensive planning process, topped off with arbitrary decisions,” Wiener wrote in a 2014 op-ed.Last year, Wiener successfully pushed a bill that would override local objections in districts that don’t produce their share of housing. It was among many other bids to help ameliorate the affordability crisis. His new bill would wipe out height and density limits around all transit stations and major bus routes in the state to allow construction of buildings five to eight stories high. It has won support from a group of 100 Silicon Valley tech industry leaders, who signed a letter saying workers desperately need the housing. It also has financial backing from developers.“Things are not going to get better by sticking to the status quo,” said Ethan Elkind, director of the climate program at the University of California, Berkeley’s Center for Law, Energy & the Environment. He said the state needed both affordable and market-rate housing near transit to reverse California’s tendency toward suburban sprawl. “We have to go full bore by building as much transit-oriented housing as possible.” Outside in America news California state legislators are considering an overhaul of the city planning rulebook.Photograph: Alamy The mayor of Berkeley, California, has called it “a declaration of war”. A neighborhood group in Los Angeles said it would be akin to forcing Native Americans from their land. Amid a desperate housing crisis, legislators in the Golden State have prompted an outcry with new proposals that threaten to take the rulebook that governs American city planning and throw it out the window. Their proposition: reducing cities’ power to decide what gets built and putting more control into state hands.“We have a housing deficit in the millions and it grows every year,” said the state senator Scott Wiener, author of a bill at the center of the fight. A Los Angeles city councilman said it could make beach neighborhoods look like “Dubai 10 years later” and Dick Platkin, a former Los Angeles city planner, said allowing eight-story towers around all transit stations would enforce a “one-size-fits-all” solution. In an interview, meanwhile, Mayor Jesse Arreguin of Berkeley called the proposed rule change “extreme”.“This will change the character of neighborhoods in the Bay Area and throughout the state.”Others see Wiener’s plan in even starker terms, underlining the challenge that he and Yimby groups face.A stakeholders’ coalition in the Crenshaw district, a Los Angeles neighborhood that has historically had a large African American community, charged that the bill would drive up prices. The result, they said, would be the displacement of low-income residents on the scale of the Trail of Tears that followed President Andrew Jackson’s 1830 Indian Removal Act.“This will be the straw that broke the camel’s back,” said Damien Goodmon, director of the Crenshaw Subway Coalition.Do you have an experience of homelessness to share with the Guardian? This article is more than 9 months old Share on Twitter The president had been due to meet Rosenstein at the White House on Thursday, following reports that the DoJ’s second-highest official had offered to resign last week – and had faced being fired – after an account emerged of him reportedly discussing whether Trump should be removed from office.Trump pointed out on Wednesday that Rosenstein had denied making such remarks, first attributed to him in a New York Times report, including that he had discussed possibly secretly recording the president and using the constitution’s 25th amendment to remove Trump from office in 2017, early in the administration.“I would much prefer keeping Rod Rosenstein,” Trump said at a news conference in New York. “He said he did not say it. He said he does not believe that. Engineers at Harvard University have developed a soft robotic glove that grants individuals with limited hand mobility the ability to grip and pick up objects. This glove could help an estimated 6.8 million people in the United States with hand mobility issues, such as those with a progressive disability, stroke, or old age. There are so many tasks often taken for granted by individuals without disabilities (e.g. buttoning a shirt, using eating utensils, picking up a telephone etc.). Meanwhile, for most persons with muscular dystrophy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and other conditions, these “simple” activities are anything but simple. The engineers hope to someday help affected individuals regain independence with this new robotic glove, and ultimately improve their quality of life. The glove has been engineered by Conor Walsh and his team of engineers. Walsh is an assistant professor of mechanical and biomedical engineering and founder of the Harvard Biodesign Lab at SEAS, and is a core staff member at the Wyss Institute.“From the start of this project, we’ve focused on understanding the real-world challenges facing these patients by visiting them in their homes to perform research,” said Walsh. The holistic approach Walsh and his team are taking ensures that “technology development goes beyond simple functionality to incorporate social and psychological elements of design that promote seamless adoption by its end users.”To maximize the glove’s potential for all users, the team has incorporated patient feedback at every stage of development. So far, nine individuals with muscular dystrophy, ALS, incomplete spinal cord injuries, or complications from a stroke have tested the glove so far. This robotic glove is mechanically programmed to execute a single task, performed with a bending motion of the fingers and a bending and twisting movement of the thumb. This MIT review continues explaining:The fingers are essentially silicone balloons–pink, rubbery things–with yellow fibers crisscrossed inside. When pressurized water is pumped into the glove from an attached waist pack, the fibers keep the balloon from expanding, so their arrangement programs the finger to bend in a particular way. For example, there are fewer fibers at the knuckles, which induces the finger to bend there. There are already existing robots with hard exoskeletons which serve as assistive devices guiding patients through rehab exercises. However, the soft glove “aligns more flexibly with a patient’s joints, plays nice with soft tissue like human skin, and, since it is much lighter, could eventually be taken home instead of being limited to use in a clinic.”To learn more about this project, be sure to check out the full article on the Harvard Gazette.Share this…TwitterFacebookPinterestLinkedInEmailPrint RelatedAM221 – Kinova Assistive RoboticsFebruary 3, 2017In “Accessibility Minute”AM286 – Bestic for Mealtime independenceMay 18, 2018In “Accessibility Minute”Robots Designed to Assist People with DisabilitiesAugust 27, 2010In “Products and Devices”

Now available, open source and enterprise edition Alluxio 2.0 adds major capabilities to simplify & accelerate multi-cloud, data-intensive workload adoption and deploymentAlluxio, developer of open source data orchestration technology used by seven of the world’s top 10 Internet companies, today announced at AWS Summit New York the availability of Alluxio 2.0 with breakthrough innovations for data engineers managing and deploying analytical and AI workloads in the cloud, particularly for hybrid and multi-cloud environments. The rise of compute intensive workloads and the adoption of the cloud has driven organizations to adopt a decoupled architecture for modern workloads – one in which compute scales independently from storage. While this enables scaling elasticity, it introduces new data engineering problems – this is where an abstraction layer is needed. Just as compute and containers need Kubernetes, with data silos only increasing, data also needs orchestration – a tier, one that brings data locality, data accessibility and data elasticity to compute across data silos, zones, regions and even clouds.Marketing Technology News: SeQuel Response Hires New Director of Marketing to Propel Brand Awareness“With a data orchestration platform in place, a data analyst or scientist can work under the assumption that the data will be readily accessible regardless of where the data resides or the characteristics of the storage. They can focus on building data driven analytical and AI applications to create values, without worrying about the environment and vendor lock-in,” said Haoyuan Li, Founder and CTO, Alluxio. “These new advancements to Alluxio’s data orchestration platform further cement our commitment to a cloud-native, open source approach to enabling applications to be compute, storage and cloud agnostic.”Alluxio 2.0 Community Edition and Enterprise Edition includes new capabilities across critical areas that are gaps in today’s cloud data engineering market:Breakthrough Data Orchestration Innovation for Multi-cloud: Policy-driven Data Managemento Alluxio 2.0 includes a new capability that allows data engineers to automate data movement across storage systems based on pre-defined policies on an automated and on-going basis. This means that as data is created and hot, warm, cold data is managed, Alluxio can automate tiering of data across any number of storage systems across on-premises and across all clouds.o Data platform teams can now reduce storage costs by automatically managing only the most important data in expensive storage systems and moving other data to cheaper storage alternatives.Improved Administration of Data Access Policieso In addition to fine grained policies at the file level, now users can configure policies at any directory and folder level to streamline access of data as well as performance of workloads. These include defining behaviors for individual datasets on various core functions like writing data or syncing data with storage systems under Alluxio.Cross Cloud Storage Efficient Data Movement via Data Serviceo The new data service allows for highly efficient data movement including across cloud stores like AWS S3 and Google GCS, making expensive operations on object storage seamless to the compute framework.Compute Optimized Data Access for Cloud Analytics:Compute-focused Cluster Partitioning o Users can now partition a single Alluxio based on any dimension, so that datasets for each framework or workload isn’t contaminated by the other. Most common usage includes partitioning the cluster by framework Spark, Presto etc. In addition, this allows for reduced data transfer costs, constraining data to stay within a specific zone or region.Integration with External Data Sources Over RESTo Users can now bring in data even from web-based data sources to aggregate in Alluxio to perform their analytics. Any web location with files can be simplify pointed to Alluxio to be pulled in as needed based on the query or model run.Marketing Technology News: Nordic XR-company Bublar Group Acquires Finnish Augmented Reality Pioneer SayduckAmazon AWS Support:AWS Elastic Map Reduce (EMR) Service Integrationo As users move to cloud services to deploy analytical and AI workloads, services like AWS EMR are increasingly used. Alluxio can now be seamlessly bootstrapped into an AWS EMR cluster making it available as a data layer within EMR for Spark, Presto and Hive frameworks. Users now have a high-performance alternative to cache data from S3 or remote data while also reducing data copies maintained in EMR.Architectural Foundations Using Open Source:Many core foundational elements have been re-architected using the best open source technologies with a vision of hyper scale.RocksDB is now used for tiering metadata of files and objects for data that Alluxio manages to enable hyperscaleGRPC – Google’s highly efficient version of RPC is now the core transport protocol used for communication within the cluster as well as between the Alluxio client and master, making communications more efficient. This data is being requested by various compute frameworks, as well as different types of users hoping to gain actionable insight,” said Mike Leone, Analyst, ESG. “These multiple layers of complexity are driving the need for a solution to improve on the process of making the most valuable data accessible to compute at the speed of innovation. Alluxio has identified an important missing piece that makes data more local and easily accessible to data-powered compute frameworks regardless of where the data resides or the characteristics of the underlying storage systems and clouds.”“Whether by design or by departmental necessity, companies are facing an explosion of data that is spread across hybrid and multi-cloud environments. What do you think has been the most satisfying moment of your tenure as Chief Minister? When I became Chief Minister, we were a rice-deficit state. We had to import rice from other states. Now, we are the third-largest contributor to the public distribution system. We are totally self-sufficient in rice. Earlier, Odisha was known as a failure in disaster management. Now, we have set international standards. Even the United Nations has complimented us on that. Looking back at your life before and after joining politics, do you have any regrets? Because you led a very different kind of life before and, perhaps, are a very rare example of somebody who has changed so much after joining politics; so much that you have not left Odisha? No, I do not miss the earlier life. Life in Odisha and doing good work is more satisfying.Do you think you could have done perhaps better when it comes to unemployment and youth?Odisha has the best skill agency in India and we are doing our best as far as unemployment is concerned. But could you have done better? You can always do better, but we are trying very hard.In your election speeches, Kalia is very frequently mentioned. You have accused the BJP of stalling the implementation of Kalia. You have gone to the Election Commission complaining about it. How do you think it is going out to play on the ground and why is this such a crucial project for you?Kalia is an excellent scheme for farmers and we have implemented it. The central government has copied it. Now it’s being implemented all over the country. Here, during the election period, the BJP has tried to stop it. This is very bad as this is an important scheme- . The farmers will give them a befitting reply. You have maintained that you are equidistant from both the Congress and the BJP, especially since 2009. But your party has supported key BJP-led legislations in Parliament and walked out during a crucial trust vote. You have also been a member of Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s cabinet. Is it fair to say then that the BJD is perhaps closer to the BJP than to the Congress? No, we are not close to either party. They haven’t done anything much for Odisha. We supported the legislations because they were good. You have also said in your election speeches that the BJD is going to play an important role in government formation. If the BJP-led NDA coalition falls short of majority, would you lend your support to it?We will support any side that supports the just demands of Odisha. So, you are open to supporting both BJP and Congress-led formations? As I said, if they support the legitimate demand of Odisha…How would you contrast the tenures of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, whose cabinet you worked in, and Narendra Modi?I think Vajpayee was among the best prime ministers India ever had. Modi still needs to be tested. How would you compare Vajpayee and Modi?As I said, Vajpayee is one of the best prime ministers we had; Modi has not been successful. Why do you say that? You can see that in the last five years, his promises on employment, irrigation, railways etc. have not been followed.Do you think Modi deserves a second term as PM?I don’t really think so, no.How would you respond to the Prime Minister’s statement that Odisha will become another Tripura? In his dreams. You are absolutely confident nothing of the sort is going to happen?Absolutely not. We will have a comfortable majority this election. You broke it off with the BJP in 2009 following the Kandhamal riots, saying it’s a communal party. But, today you are saying that you are open to lending support to the BJP at the Centre or a BJP-led formation if it serves the interests of Odisha. How do you reconcile that?Because we have a lot of important demands which we want fulfilled. One of your key refrains this election is that you will not leave Odisha and go. Many states have given prime ministers to the country; you yourself have said there will be a coalition government now. Maybe you can serve the state better by becoming prime minister? No, I don’t think so. I will continue to stay in the state to serve it.So you have no prime ministerial ambitions at all?None whatsoever.BJP chief Amit Shah has launched a very sharp attack on you and your office. He has said that the Odisha government is a ‘fused transformer’, then he said it needed the double engine – same government at the state and Centre. He has also targeted you on your inability to speak Odia…When he speaks of ‘fused transformers’, he will learn who the transformer of Odisha is and that the BJP is a fused government. As far as Odia is concerned, I now address all my speeches in Odia. How do you perceive Rahul Gandhi as an emerging leader? He still has to mature. When you say Rahul Gandhi has to mature, would you advise him to stay in one particular state and serve for a considerable period of time before dreaming of bigger things? Like you did? That would be a healthy thing for him. Many opposition leaders, including Akhilesh Yadav, Mayawati, Arvind Kejriwal and Rahul Gandhi, have accused Narendra Modi and Amit Shah of using state instruments to settle political scores.I am afraid that’s true.Do you also feel there is a conscious attempt to polarise voters along religious lines? The BJD is a secular and democratic party. We certainly disapprove of any communal behaviour. But do you think communal polarisation is being practised on the ground?Sadly, yes.Do you feel the Election Commission of India is acting as an arm of the ruling party or do you think it has some credibility left?It seems it has become an arm of the ruling party. You are contesting for the first time from two constituencies. What prompted you to take that decision?I am standing from the second constituency because the people of western Odisha demanded that. Are you saying that the BJP poses no threat to the BJD in Odisha? No, I see no threat.Who is your principal opponent in the state? Is it Dharmendra Pradhan or is it Narendra Modi?It has become the BJP.Who in the BJP? Dharmendra Pradhan or Narendra Modi?It is Narendra Modi. What do you expect out of these results? And is BJD a one-man party? We have plenty of senior leaders. We are certainly not a one-man party.Do you have a second rung of leadership? We do, indeed. In your election affidavit, you have said that you owe your sister Rs 15 lakh. It is well-known that you are very close to her. What kind of a relationship do you share with your sister and is she your political advisor? She is not my political advisor. She lives far away. What is your attachment to the old ambassador car that you have? You are not selling it off or disposing it off?It was my father’s car. Chris HemsworthF. Gary GrayMen in Black Internationalmovie review First Published: June 14, 2019, 12:53 PM IST Men In Black InternationalCast: Chris Hemsworth, Tessa ThompsonDirector: F Gary Gray They haven’t gotten the universe right, literally and philosophically. This franchise has mostly worked on smartly done literal jokes and the charm of its lead actors. F Gary Gray, the director, has also used these ploys but somehow the combination is way beyond salvation. He is way beyond the center of MIB films. When the first film released in 1997, it was one of its kind—mixing aliens with agents, two prominent genres of that time. Will Smith’s casual humour and Tommy Lee Jones’ deadpan expressions gave it an orthodox yet very identifiable touch. It was clichéd yet relatable. The sharp one-liners worked. Two decades ago, a smart retort was considered sharp. Not the case anymore.Despite using latest VFX techniques, Barry Sonnenfeld, who directed earlier Men In Black films, was old school in his approach to creating drama. His characters never shied away from being juvenile or using crass humour. On the other hand, Gary Gray, also the director of films such as Straight Outta Compton and The Fate of the Furious, seems constantly confused about the balance of childish jokes and sci-fi backdrop. Read: X Men Dark Phoenix Movie ReviewRead: Godzilla King of the Monsters Movie ReviewThe first and most prominent casualty of this dilemma is Chris Hemsworth, who appears totally out of sync. In fact, at one point, in a desperate attempt to generate laughter, he resorts to a Thor joke. Ironically, the major focus of MIB films used to be its contemporary nature and different milieu than other genre films.Tessa Thompson has a confident entry as a rookie agent, but like everyone else, she gets sucked into a world of average thinking and totally lifeless execution. As far as her character goes, one of her works in the film is to cushion Hemsworth’s handsomeness and heroic qualities. MIB International lacks drama and punch, both inside and outside the covert bureau operating for the welfare of all living beings including aliens. It’s international just for the sake of being international and is stuck in a time zone where alien films used to be mostly about salivating bizarre creatures.Voiced by Kumail Nanjiani, a character named Pawny is the only one able to generate some genuine laughs but even that falls flat after a few minutes. It’s not a film to be remembered for its surrounding, and what’s left in MIB International then. Let these agents pass without traffic signals.Rating: 1.5/5Interact with Rohit Vats at Twitter/@nawabjha
ChennaiKamal HassanMahatma GandhiMakkal Needhi Maiam First Published: May 13, 2019, 9:23 AM IST Chennai: In remarks that may again put him on a collision course with Right-wing politicians, Makkal Needhi Maiam president Kamal Haasan described Mahatma Gandhi’s assassin Nathuram Godse as independent India’s first terrorist.Speaking at an election rally for his party candidate in Aravakurichi assembly constituency, where bypolls will be held on Sunday, Haasan clarified that his statement was not meant to appeal to the Muslim-majority electorate in the constituency. “I am not saying this because many Muslims are here. I’m saying this in front of Gandhi’s statue. The first terrorist post India’s independence is a Hindu. His name is Nathuram Godse,” the actor-turned-politician reportedly said.At the rally in support of S Mohanraj, Haasan also said that Tamil Nadu is on the verge of a “political revolution” against the ruling AIADMK and the opposition DMK.“They failed to mitigate the suffering of the people. The two Dravidian parties will never come clean and won’t learn from their mistakes,” The Hindu quoted Haasan as saying.Haasan actor-politician said he was one of those “proud Indians” who desires an India with equality and where the “three colours” in the tricolour, an obvious reference to different faiths, “remained intact.”Haasan said he had come here “seeking answers for that murder,” referring to Gandhi’s assassination in 1948. “Good Indians desire equality and want the three colours in the tricolour to remain intact. I am a good Indian, will proudly proclaim that,” he added.Earlier too, Haasan had stoked a row, when in November 2017, he took potshots at what he termed as “Hindu extremism,” which drew condemnation from the BJP and Hindu outfits. Aravakurichi is one of the four Assembly constituencies where bypolls are scheduled on May 19.Reacting to Haasan’s statement, the BJP said he is lighting a “dangerous fire”.“Actor Kamalahasan recalling Gandhi’s assassination now and calling it Hindu terrorism is condemnable.Standing amidst minorities in TN by-election campaign he is lighting a dangerous fire to gain votes by minority appeasement.kamal didn’t opine on recent Srilanka bomb blast why? (sic),” Tamil Nadu BJP chief Tamilisai Soundararajan tweeted.“But dares to take up decades old event which was well enquired & guilty punished ?He threatened to leave india when his film screening was prevented by religious groups!but now he calls himself true indian! True political acting started now having lost the chances in screenplay. (sic),” she added. Also criticising the veteran actor was Bollywood star Vivek Oberoi, who will be seen essaying the role of Narendra Modi in a biopic based on the PM.“Dear Kamal sir, you are a great artist. Just like art has no religion, terror has no religion either! You can say Ghodse was a terrorist, why would you specify ‘Hindu’ ? Is it because you were in a Muslim dominated area looking for votes?” Oberoi said. Please sir, from a much smaller artist to a great one, let’s not divide this country, we are one 🙏 Jai Hind 🇮🇳 #AkhandBharat #UnDividedIndia— Vivek Anand Oberoi (@vivekoberoi) May 13, 2019
index of stranger things season 3matt duffermaya hawkemillie bobby brown First Published: June 21, 2019, 1:12 PM IST Supernatural beings try to end the world, the superheroes go wrong in saving mankind and the evil forces return to dominate. It might appear to be the plot of Marvel’s latest release Avengers: Endgame, the third season of Netflix’s popular series Stranger Things looks to follow a similar path.On Thursday, a new trailer of Stranger Things 3 was released by the streaming giant. So far we know that the threat from the Upside Down still lingers on the town of Hawkins. While the previous clips from the show have shown us how’s life after the Demogorgon attacked the city, but little did we know about the dangers. At the end of Season 2, Eleven did close the door but she along with her group of friends was unaware that the evil escaped and is out in open. The trailer also teases that minor character like Max’s older brother Billy will have a significant part to play in the new season. Take a look at the trailer:Talking about the show Miley Bobby Brown, who plays the role of Eleven, a young girl with psychokinetic abilities said in an interview, “Hopper and Eleven this season really resemble what me and my dad are. You know, just a real father daughter relationship, something that is extremely raw, emotional and yet normal. I mean, he just adopted her last season.” Although Eleven spends most of her time with other teenage characters in the show, the 15-year-old actor believes her relationship with Hopper, a father figure to her, is now progressing to the next level. Brown was all praise for 44-year-old Harbour, who essays the role of Hopper, the police chief of the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana.”David Harbour is just like one of my favourite people. He’s so incredibly talented and I learned something new from him every day. And he deserves every award on this planet to be awarded. It’s apparent that he wants to be seen as the family head where everything else works as per his commands.Sanjay Yadav, one of RJD’s political strategists and the person behind its social media gameplan, says it’s about creating a synergy between the leader and his/her audience. He says, “Every leader has their individual identity, appeal and target audience, and that decides the content. If anybody has come to listen to Laluji then the speaker and listener both know what is expected of them. Similarly, Tejashwiji understands the expectations of the youth.”In comparison, Rabri Devi has a more aggressive stance. Recently, she engaged in a verbal volley with a journalist and eventually won more sympathisers. Sanjay says, “In a way, it was a challenge thrown at a woman who came from a rural background. It reeked of patriarchy. You can criticise a political statement but what kind of entitlement was this? If the Prime Minister tweets something in Kannada, does he write it himself?”He adds, “We are not bothered much about the opposition on social media, it’s more about ideology. If there are haters then there are supporters as well. It helps in breaking new grounds even if the mainstream media doesn’t support us.”While Lalu Prasad’s account is more about projecting absurdity and Tejashwi’s about youthfulness, Rabri Devi focuses on emotional appeal. She frequently uses Bhojpuri and presents herself as the victim. It’s a 360 degree approach to looking at social issues and still keeping it in the family.Sanjay adds another dimension to it and says, “It’s not the time when you can say anything and walk away just because RJD is a regional party.”For a party that didn’t have any digital footprint seven years back, it’s a long journey in a short span. Sanjay says, “Initially around 2012, there wasn’t even an official website of RJD. There were supporters but they were not mobilised and properly channelised. We thought there should be a robust strategy when we can rope in supporters and sympathisers.” Now when the digital battle is as intense as the on-ground campaigning, the RJD looks ahead of its local counterparts, at least for the time being. Sanjay confidently says, “I don’t think any other party in Bihar has been able to achieve what we have.” biharJanta Dal UnitedJD(U)Lalu Prasad Yadav First Published: May 17, 2019, 3:09 PM IST New Delhi: Convicted in the fodder scam, this is the first time in the last three decades that RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav is not a participant in the high-voltage electioneering in Bihar. However, in his absence, the party is attempting to disseminate its leader’s message through the social media. If one cannot hear the RJD chief make a speech this election, his supporters want that the quintessential Lalu quips, the banter and humour can at least be read on the leader’s Twitter feed. “Dear friends! While in jail, My Twitter handle shall be operated by my office in consultation with family. I shall speak my mind through visitors. The fight to preserve the Constitution & protect the rights of vulnerable groups shall go on,” Prasad’s Twitter handle reads.RJD’s rise to prominence in the social media ladder is also a reflection of its ambitions because its main opponent and current Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s party, Janta Dal (United), is indeed nascent in the Twitter space. Opened in January last year, it has around 3,000 followers, a number that’s no match for other major influencers in the same space. The point is not the numbers though, but the impression the RJD is creating. With senior Yadav in jail, the onus is on his son Tejashwi and he, along with party’s official handle and parents’ handles, is killing it on Twitter.Sample this tweet in which he is channelling humour and political slogan in one:This is just one part of it as Lalu Prasad’s account carries his easygoing, rustic image.Take a look:This is almost as if he is interacting with a live audience, something that the Delhi CM and AAP member Arvind Kejriwal has also used effectively in the past. But what makes Prasad unique is the colloquial usage of ‘lalten’ (oil lamp). Such phrases immediately strike a chord in a state known for, rather made fun of, its easily perceptible pronunciations. Then he switches gear and attacks opponents mercilessly. While his parody accounts and impressionists have turned ‘budbak’ (simpleton) into one of the most identified ‘Bihari’ words over the years, he is still exploiting it for traction. Then there are these tweets which are aimed at consolidating core voters:
According to a statement from Opera, its Opera Max app ‘had a substantially different value proposition’ versus the company’s browser products, the latter of which will now be its focus. The company will announce the end of its service-side support in the future, at which point existing users will need to switch to an alternative. While we don’t know when that server-side support will end, we do know which apps are the best options for filling that eventual void.DataEyePerhaps the highest-rated data saver app on the Google Play Store (that isn’t Opera Max) is DataEye, an app that works in a similar way to reduce how much data you’re using. The app works in basically the same way as Opera Max: turns on the data-saving feature and then leave it be. The app tracks how much data is being used by each app, as well, so you can easily see which ones are using up your mobile data.Onavo’s ProtectOnavo offers an app called ‘Protect’ that is a combination VPN and data saver (as is Opera Max). Users are able to monitor their data usage, but also limit data from being used in the background, restrict data usage to only WiFi, set usage alerts about data usage by specific apps, and more. The combination of features give users more control over their data than would otherwise be possible with Android’s built-in data features.Google TriangleGoogle is testing its own Android data-saving app, but you can only download it if you’re located in the Philippines at the moment. The app is called Triangle, and it’s somewhat like the data-saving app that Google launched for its Chrome browser a few years ago. The app blocks unnecessary background data usage when you’re on a mobile network, allows the user to choose which apps can use data and set time limits for how long they have access to data, and more. It’s worth keeping an eye on this app for when it launches more broadly. Following its launch in 2014, Opera has decided to discontinue its data-saving app for Android. The app is no longer listed in the Google Play Store, but existing users will get to use it for a while longer. Eventually, though, Opera is going to terminate support for those who are still using the app, forcing them to switch to a different product altogether.
