That makes for a mighty slow Windows experience. This Lenovo model features a 128GB solid-state drive, so it should be pretty quick to boot and load software, even with its basic processor. Plus, it has a DVD-burner! That’s not something you see in many modern laptops, especially at this price. Review • iPhone XS review, updated: A few luxury upgrades over the XR I thought this might be a mistake, but, no, the weirdly named HP Laptop 15t Value is indeed quite the value at this price. However, I strongly recommend paying an extra $50 to upgrade that display to FHD (1,920×1,080), because you’re not likely to be happy with the native 1,366×768 resolution. $520 at HP Chris Monroe/CNET Use promo code 19LABOR10 to get an unusually good deal on JBL’s interesting hybrid product — not quite headphones, and not quite a traditional speaker, but something you wear like neckphones to listen to music on the go. EU to require speed limiters driver monitors in new cars from 2022

Posted On Sep 10 2019 by

first_imgEnlarge ImageNew cars sold in Europe from 2022 will be required to have many more safety features as standard. Mercedes-Benz New cars sold in Europe after May 2022 will be required to have a variety of new safety technologies, including speed limiters and systems to monitor the driver’s attention levels. The European Commission announced the rules Tuesday, saying that intelligent speed limiters alone could reduce fatalities on European roads by 20 percent. The speed-limit systems would use road-sign recognition or data from navigation maps to warn the driver of the current speed limit and whether he or she is exceeding it. Such technology is actually offered on many new vehicles already, but the EU plan is to make it standard on every car.Other technologies that would be required include systems to determine whether a driver is distracted or drowsy, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, backup cameras and an improved event data recorder to store information from before a crash. The rules still need to be formally approved by the EU Parliament later this year, the Commission said. The EU Commission’s announcement said that it expects the safety technologies to prevent about 25,000 deaths and 140,000 injuries on the roads between 2022 and 2038. While new models need to have the technology from May 2022, existing vehicle models will have until May 2024 to add it.The announcement comes on the heels of Volvo’s commitment to limit the top speed of all its future cars to 112 miles per hour, as well as the company’s announcement that all of its future vehicles will have camera systems designed to detect drowsy, distracted or intoxicated drivers. While the US does not yet have a mandate for automatic emergency braking, the majority of automakers have pledged to make AEB standard on all new cars by September 2022. Chevrolet CorvetteMoving up from the 10th-place slot last year is the 2019 Chevrolet Corvette. While we’ve all been ogling the new mid-engine Corvette, it’s easy to forget what a performance bargain the current-generation ‘Vette is. From the base trim to the Grand Sport to the bonkers ZR1, the Corvette is an American icon.My preference is for the Grand Sport, which strikes a perfect balance between everyday drivability and canyon-carving performance. The 6.2-liter V8 puts out 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. You can get it with a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, but the kicker is the borrowed chassis and aero parts from the beefier Z06. Like I said, perfect balance. The Corvette is made in Bowling Green, Kentucky. GMC CanyonIf you’re looking for a slightly fancier version of the Colorado that’s more focused on luxe than dirt, check out the GMC Canyon. The top Denali trim gets standard heated and ventilated front seats as well as a heated steering wheel. Maximum payload capability is 1,665 pounds while max towing is a fairly healthy 7,600 pounds. The Canyon is available with the same 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, 3.6-liter V6 or 2.8-liter diesel as the Chevrolet Colorado. It’s also built in Wentzville, Missouri. This crossover-that-looks-like-a-truck provides a better ride than a traditional pickup and gets an awesome lockable trunk right in the floor of the bed. And it doesn’t do the truck stuff too badly, either, as it’s able to carry 1,860 pounds of payload and tow 3,500 pounds. The Ridgeline is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 good for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. That is channeled through a six-speed automatic transmission with available all-wheel drive. It’s built in Lincoln, Alabama. 2019 Jeep Cherokee can handle the rough stuff Car Industry,Enlarge ImageIt’s all in a day’s work for the Jeep Cherokee, the most American-made car in 2019. Jeep With high trade tensions looming and increasing talk of tariffs, more and more consumers are looking to buy American. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Either way, we’re big fans of all the vehicles on this list. These days, buying American doesn’t necessarily mean sticking with a US-based automaker. 2019 Honda Ridgeline: The commuter’s pickup truck Tags 2019 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison: An off-road animal Car Industry 18 Photos 2019 Honda Ridgeline review: Light duty, heavy punch 2019 GMC Canyon: A fancier Colorado 2019 Honda Odyssey offers plenty of room and features for families More From Roadshow 2020 Subaru Outback first drive: Tech and trail mix 26 Photos Tags Acura MDXMoving up one slot to sixth place on the American Made Index is the non-hybrid variant of the Acura MDX. The Cabin Watch video system lets parents keep an eye on their little darlings without turning around in their seats, while Cabin Talk amplifies their voice so no yelling is required. The Odyssey is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 rated for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Like its MDX counterpart, the RDX is available with the A-Spec styling package. The RDX sports a 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine. Output is stated at 273 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, and it’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. An available 8-inch touchscreen gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot.Under the hood is the stalwart 3.5-liter V6 producing 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. However unlike the Ridgeline, the Passport sends that power through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Having said that, just like the Ridgeline, this is the only powertrain available. The Honda Passport is built in Lincoln, Alabama. 3 52 Photos Comments Jeep CherokeeKeeping its top-of-the-list placement, the Jeep Cherokee is 2019’s most American-made car. Refreshed for 2019, the compact crossover now features more tech, better cargo space and a slightly tweaked look. It’s available in no fewer the nine trims, including the off-road specific Trailhawk and a fancy-pants Trailhawk Elite. For 2019, the Cherokee gets a new 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, though naturally aspirated I4 and V6 choices are also available. Regardless of engine, a nine-speed automatic transmission gets the power to the pavement — or dirt as the case may be. The Cherokee is made in Belvidere, Illinois. Chevrolet ColoradoMaking its debut in the top 10 is the Chevrolet Colorado. Shown here in the tough ZR2 Bison off-road spec, the Chevy Colorado is an excellent truck and one of the two midsize pickups you can get with a diesel engine. Adding to the ZR2’s two-inch lift and front and rear locking differentials, the Bison gets beefier skid plates (trust me, that’s a good thing), steel bumpers and integrated recovery points. Heck, you can even get a snorkel.Base models get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission, but a more popular choice is the 3.6-liter V6 gas engine with 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the 2.8-liter diesel pumps out 186 horsepower and a delicious 369 pound-feet of twist and is mated to a six-speed automatic. Faraday Future is back again this time with new investors

Faraday Future Faraday Future is back. Maybe. Probably? Well, kind of. Anyway, that’s what it said in a press release on Monday.Faraday has had a rough few years of late, and this latest round of investors, coupled with some serious restructuring has the company talking about finally sending its FF91 electric minivan supercar thing into actual honest-to-gosh production.Who would be crazy enough to invest in a company with the history that Faraday has? And the reputation that its founder has? Well, a few companies. First, there is The9. The9 entered into a joint venture agreement with FF in which it will provide up to $600 million in cash and Faraday will kick in some Chinese land use rights which the two will use to build electric cars.Next, Faraday Future — with the help of a valuation advisor — got its IP valued at $1.25 billion and has used that to attract other funds in the form of bridge investments. Those bridge investments are worth an additional $225 million and are being facilitated by a merchant bank called Birch Lake Investments.”Birch Lake is pleased to partner with FF at this critical juncture and is looking forward to assisting FF toward becoming a leading manufacturer of EVs in the United States, China and beyond,” said Birch Lake CEO Jack Butler in a statement. “FF’s technology, product strategy and unwavering commitment to its early 2020 production launch of the FF 91 are impressive.”Faraday Future is also working with a group called Stifel Nicolaus on an equity capital-raising program. What is all this money going to go toward? Primarily paying suppliers, finishing the design and development of the FF91 and beginning development of a volume-production model which FF is calling the FF81. 2020 BMW M340i review: A dash of M makes everything betterlast_img read more

Heres every electric vehicle on sale in the US for 2019 and

Its an affordable little hatchback that doesn’t stick out like the i3 and packs plenty of all-electric range at 238 miles. With a starting price of just $36,620, the Bolt has positioned itself as the perfect alternative to an interminable wait for a $35,000 Model 3 from Tesla. 50 Photos Audi E-TronAudi’s first purpose-built battery electric road car has been on our radar for a long time, but now it’s finally starting to get to dealerships in the US for testing and order books are open. This electric SUV packs a 95 kilowatt-hour battery and a maximum range of 204 miles. The E-Tron’s starting price isn’t cheap at around $75,000, but you do get a lot of Audi quality for that cash. Volkswagen e-GolfVolkswagen has been teasing us with electric ID concepts for years now, and while some of those are supposed to make it to production soon, the only EV you can currently get from VW is the humble e-Golf. The Mk VII Golf is already a pretty great platform, to begin with, and while the eGolf’s range isn’t stellar at just 119 miles, it’s a pleasant enough car to live with and drive. Plus, with a starting price of $31,895, it’s actually not that bad of a deal.Correction 4/30 9:10 a.m.: Updated to include revised EPA range estimates on some vehicles. 63 Photos 2020 Toyota Corolla Hybrid review: Sip with subtlety 31 Photos 79 Photos Nissan Leaf PlusThe Leaf Plus is Nissan’s answer to cars like the Tesla Model 3, the Kona Electric and the Bolt. It has the Leaf line’s best range yet at 226 miles, and while it’s not as cheap as the standard leaf, it offers you more for your money. More what? Power and torque mostly. Sure some of its tech is a little old, but that means it’s well proven at this point. Tags Nissan LeafAh yes, the granddaddy of all affordable electric cars. There is a reason that the Leaf is the world’s bestselling EV by a factor of a zillion. And if you’ve spent time in one recently, you’ll know it’s easy to see why that is. The Leaf is a simple, well-built, affordable electric car that offers reasonable range — 150 miles — and still feels a little like the future. Fiat 500eThe fact that Fiat still makes and sells the 500e is wild. It’s arguably one of the least capable EVs on sale today, and it’s not especially cheap at just under $33,000, considering what it is. Still, if you need something Fiat-shaped and don’t have to drive more than 84 miles between charges, it’s the car for you. 2017 Honda Clarity Electric quietly hits the road Hyundai Kona ElectricThe Kona Electric is one of the most exciting new EVs you can buy right now. It has excellent range, weird-but-fun styling, tons of standard equipment and all the other killer Hyundai stuff, including a great warranty. The Kona EV is a lot quicker and more fun to drive than you’d expect, while its range of 258 miles puts it among the upper-echelon of modern battery-electrics. With a price tag starting at $36,950, you’re getting a lot for your money. 2019 Jaguar I-Pace: A spunky electric cat Electric cars are becoming an increasingly common sight on American roads. And while just a few brands may dominate the news cycle, there are actually well over a dozen fully battery-electric models on sale in the US today. We thought it would be helpful to throw together a guide to better make sense of all your electric options if you’re on the hunt for a new car. And to go a step further, we’re also adding just how far each one will go on a single charge. Hyundai Ioniq ElectricHyundai is getting way more into the electric vehicle game, but the car that started it out for them was the Ioniq Electric, and you can still get it. It’s basic in almost every sense of the word, including range — 124 miles — but it’s also basic in price. This bad boy lists for just a hair over $30K and that makes it a decent deal. Tesla Model 3This is the EV to which all other midpriced electric vehicles have to answer. The Model 3 is just that good. It’s comfortable, fun to drive, has tons of cargo space and one of the best ranges in its class — the Long Range AWD model offers 310 miles. That doesn’t mean that it’s not without its downsides. It’s not cheap, its interior is spartan, and the center display can take some getting used to. Also, Tesla’s build quality is notoriously spotty, but if you can live with all that, the Model 3 is hard to beat. 2019 Kia Niro EV: Kia’s first long-range EV 40 Photos Tesla’s Model X gets artsy 2019 Audi E-Tron basking in the desert sun Comments 55 13 Photos Roadshow’s long-term 2018 Nissan Leaf in the Polar Vortex 52 Photos Kia Niro EVKia’s Niro EV is Kia’s best effort yet at making a fully battery-electric SUV that offers good range — 239 miles — for not a lot of money ($38,500 to start), and it surprised us when we drove it for the first time. But it did, and the decision ended up working in its favor. The I-Pace looks like nothing else, drives like a Jag and offers a real alternative to the Tesla Model X. The I-Pace is a practical beast too, having been designed from the ground up to be an EV, it has plenty of space for people and things and a substantial range of 234 miles. 2016 Tesla Model S 60 Kia Soul EVThe Kia Soul EV is an excellent option for someone who wants an EV but who would like to fly under the radar most of the time. It’s the affordable, well-thought-out little SUV-hatchback-crossover thing we’ve always loved, just with way more torque and a range of only 111 miles. But we’d recommend that you wait for the 2020 model, which is better in almost every way, if you’re considering this. The 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV is a balance of power and practicality 38 Photos 30 Photos Tesla Model XThe Tesla Model X is like the Model S in that it’s fast and expensive, but it’s also bigger, roomier and has the craziest doors to be found on a production car this side of the Lamborghini Aventador. Thanks to a similar update to the Model S, the X 100D now offers 325 miles of range on a single charge. That’s not bad for something so big. VW e-Golf wraps new electric drive in hatchback goodness Tesla Model SThe Model S has been around in more or less the same form since 2012. It’s gotten several updates to its hardware, its styling and its performance but it is still one of the oldest vehicles here. That said, it’s also the reigning champ of all-electric range. Thanks to a recent overhaul, the S 100D can eke out 370 miles on a single charge. Unfortunately, it’s also $88,000 before adding things like different wheels, paint or Tesla’s dubiously named Full Self-Driving feature. 66 Photos The 2015 Fiat 500e is a chic Italian car with an eco sensibility (pictures) 45 Photos BMW i3BMW’s i3 has always been a little weird looking and expensive at $44,450, but it does offer a few things that nothing else in the class can match. The biggest of these is its carbon-fiber chassis, which increases stiffness, reduces weight and looks great on a spec sheet. The i3 is definitely meant to be a city car with a relatively short range — up to 153 miles — but it is easy to park and a nice place to spend time, so we can’t fault it too much. 2020 Kia Soul review: Well-rounded box 2019 Hyundai Kona Electric rocks a familiar form Smart Audi BMW Chevrolet Honda Hyundai Jaguar Kia Nissan Tesla Volkswagen Honda Clarity ElectricThe Honda Clarity Electric is available, it’s spacious and those are kind of the best things we can say about it. When you consider its size and the competition, a range of just 89 miles is unacceptable. Add in that you can’t buy the car outright, only lease it, and it compounds things further. Still, it’s a Honda and all the stuff that Honda does well — like build quality — is up there, so that counts for something. 14 Photos Audi Honda BMW Fiat Chevrolet Hyundai Kia Tesla Volkswagen Jaguar Smart ForTwo EQThis is a car that has never been a massive seller in the US. It’s expensive, not very practical and frankly not great. Smart has announced that the 2019 model year will be the company’s last in the US and Canada, and given the EQ’s low sales numbers, we’re not surprised. Still, its got a range of 58 miles (the worst on our list, but plenty in a city) and is probably the easiest thing on our list to park, so if that’s a priority for you, act fast.
